DC Inmates Closer to Home: New Placement Rules

This new law aims to place convicted individuals from the District of Columbia in prisons located closer to their homes, within 250 miles of the District of Columbia. This is intended to facilitate family contact and support their reintegration into society after serving their sentences. There are exceptions to this rule in extraordinary circumstances.
Key points
Inmates from the District of Columbia will be placed in correctional facilities no further than 250 miles from the District of Columbia, unless they consent to a more distant placement.
The goal is to facilitate contact with family and loved ones, which can aid in their return to normal life after release from prison.
In exceptional circumstances, such as for security reasons, it will be possible to place an inmate further away, but this requires a written explanation.
