Paid Sick Leave for Employees and Their Families

This act establishes a right to paid sick leave for most employees, allowing them to address their own health needs or those of their family members. Employees can also use this time for issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Smaller employers may provide unpaid sick leave instead of paid.
Key points
Employees will earn at least 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 56 hours per year.
Sick leave can be used for personal illness, medical appointments, caring for a sick child, parent, spouse, domestic partner, or other close relative, and for issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
Employers cannot require an employee to find a replacement for their sick leave or use sick leave as a negative factor in employment decisions.
The act provides protection against discrimination and retaliation for exercising sick leave rights or reporting violations.
The provisions do not override existing state or local laws that offer more generous sick leave benefits.
