Easier Access to Diabetes Self-Management Training and Telemedicine

New rules aim to make it easier for people with diabetes to access self-management training, including through telemedicine. This means more people will be able to benefit from free training that will help them better control their diabetes and avoid complications. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Key points
Medicare will cover 100% of the costs for diabetes self-management training, with no additional out-of-pocket expenses for the patient.
Patients with diabetes will have access to 10 initial hours of training and up to 2 hours of annual training to help them manage their condition in daily life.
Online diabetes training programs will be tested, making education more accessible for individuals living far from medical centers or facing transportation difficulties.
Training can be provided not only by physicians but also by other qualified non-physician practitioners, increasing service availability.
