PrEP and PEP Access: Free Treatment and Insurance Protection
This act aims to increase access to HIV prevention medications (PrEP and PEP) by ensuring their free coverage by most health insurance plans, including private, federal, and programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Additionally, it prohibits discrimination in life, disability, and long-term care insurance due to taking these medications. It also introduces educational campaigns and financial support programs for states and organizations to raise awareness and improve access to treatment.
Key points
Free Access to PrEP and PEP: Health insurance plans (private, federal, Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, VA, Indian Health Service) will be required to cover the costs of HIV prevention medications, administrative fees, lab tests, and monitoring without additional charges.
Prohibition on Prior Authorization: Insurers will not be able to require prior authorization for PrEP drugs if they offer another therapeutically equivalent drug without such requirements.
Protection Against Insurance Discrimination: Insurance companies will be prohibited from denying, limiting, or increasing premiums for life, disability, or long-term care insurance solely because an individual is taking PrEP.
Education Campaigns and Support: The act mandates public education campaigns for citizens and healthcare providers to increase awareness of PrEP and PEP and combat stigma. Grant programs will also be established for states and organizations to expand access to these services.
Privacy Protection: Ensures individuals can access PrEP benefits under a family plan without other enrolled family members being informed of such use.
