SNAP Rules Update: Cost-of-Living Adjustments Won't Reduce Benefits.

This bill aims to ensure that cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) and certain supplementary payments are not counted as income when determining eligibility for the SNAP food assistance program. This means individuals receiving these benefits will not lose access to food assistance or have their benefits reduced due to an increase in their COLA income. The changes will take effect on October 1, 2024.
Key points
Cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) from Social Security and Railroad Retirement will not be counted as income for SNAP eligibility.
Supplementary payments from Social Security (Section 1616) will also be excluded from income calculations for SNAP.
Individuals already receiving SNAP will not lose eligibility or have their benefits reduced due to these increases.
The changes will become effective on October 1, 2024.
