Faster Meat & Poultry Inspections: New Rules for Producers

New regulations aim to streamline the approval process for alternate inspection rates at meat and poultry establishments. This means producers can get faster approval to increase production speed, potentially affecting product availability and prices in stores. At the same time, the regulations ensure food safety standards are maintained.
Key points
The Department of Agriculture must publish clear food safety criteria for faster inspections within 90 days.
Producer requests for faster inspections will be reviewed within 90 days; no response means approval.
Establishments already operating with faster inspections can continue if they maintain safety standards.
In case of non-compliance, establishments have 180 days to remedy issues before losing faster inspection approval.
