New Veteran Health Savings Accounts: Access to Private Primary Care

This act establishes a five-year pilot program allowing veterans to use health savings accounts. These accounts will enable them to pay for primary care services from private healthcare providers, outside the Department of Veterans Affairs system. The goal is to offer veterans more choice and flexibility in accessing primary care.
Key points
Veterans can receive special health savings accounts to pay for private primary care.
The program is five years long and voluntary for veterans enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs system.
Accounts cover doctor visits, medications, and related costs, but veterans cannot simultaneously receive the same services from the Department.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will determine the annual amount deposited into accounts and monitor the program for fraud.
