Transfer of Historic Cherokee Lands in Tennessee into Tribal Trust.

This Act places specific Federal lands in Tennessee, currently managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), into trust for the benefit of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). The primary goal is to preserve and interpret Cherokee history and culture, including maintaining memorials and recreational trails. While the land transfers to tribal trust, the TVA retains crucial rights related to water level control and flood protection.
Key points
Historic lands (approx. 76.1 acres) and permanent easements (approx. 19.9 acres) in Monroe County, Tennessee, are transferred into trust for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The lands must be used mainly for cultural, educational, and recreational purposes, including museums, memorials, and interpretive trails.
Class II and Class III gaming are prohibited on the transferred lands.
The TVA retains the right to temporarily flood parts of the land and control water levels in the Tellico Reservoir for river management and flood control purposes.
