Civilian Climate Corps: Jobs, Justice, and Climate Change Response
This act establishes a Civilian Climate Corps to help communities combat climate change and transition to a clean economy. The program offers jobs, training, and benefits, focusing on supporting low-income and minority communities disproportionately affected by climate impacts. This aims to improve environmental and economic security for citizens.
Key points
Job Creation: Millions of unemployed individuals and those facing barriers to opportunity, especially in low-income rural, urban, and tribal areas, will gain employment and career development in the green economy sector.
Climate Change Mitigation: Corps members will work on projects to reduce emissions, build disaster resilience, improve environmental quality, and support the transition to renewable energy.
Community Support: At least 50% of the Corps' labor and investment will be directed towards under-resourced communities, including communities of color, low-income, and tribal communities, which are most impacted by climate change and pollution.
Participant Benefits: Participants will receive a living allowance (minimum $17/hour), health care, childcare, counseling, and up to $25,000 for education or student loan repayment upon completion of service.
Labor Rights: Corps members will have the right to organize unions, collectively bargain, and strike, and the Civilian Climate Corps (their employer) must remain neutral in labor organizing efforts.
