Fentanyl awareness and overdose prevention programs for youth in schools.

This Act aims to protect children and teens from the threat of synthetic opioids like fentanyl by establishing education and prevention programs in public schools. Citizens can expect schools to receive funding for staff training, educational materials for students and families, and access to naloxone (an overdose reversal drug) in school-based health centers. New data collection methods regarding opioid access in schools will also be implemented to better inform prevention strategies.
Key points
School Grants: Establishes a pilot program (up to $50 million annually) for grants to school and public health agency partnerships to prevent synthetic opioid misuse and establish recovery programs for youth.
Staff Training: Mandates professional development for teachers and all school personnel on how to address and prevent the misuse of synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, among students.
Naloxone Availability: Allows school-based health centers to use funds for purchasing naloxone to reverse the effects of opioid overdose.
Improved Data Collection: Requires the Department of Education to collect new data on the prevalence of fentanyl in secondary schools and related disciplinary actions (suspensions, expulsions, arrests).
