Gun Background Checks: Longer Data Retention and Broader Searches

New rules aim to improve background checks for firearm purchases. The system will retain data longer and search more databases to better determine if someone can legally own a gun. Citizens whose checks take over 30 days will be notified and can correct their information.
Key points
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) will retain records related to firearm transfers for as long as needed to determine legality.
If a background check takes longer than 30 days, the individual will be notified in writing and can submit information to correct or clarify their records.
NICS will search additional databases, including the National Data Exchange and National Crime Information Center, for more comprehensive background checks.
