Cerro Pelado Fire Assistance: New Office and Deadlines for Victims

This act extends existing fire assistance to include victims of the Cerro Pelado Fire in New Mexico. Citizens affected by this fire will be able to claim compensation, and a newly established office within FEMA will handle their applications. The changes also include extending deadlines for certain claims.
Key points
Individuals affected by the Cerro Pelado Fire in New Mexico will now be eligible for compensation, similar to victims of other major fires.
A new Office of Cerro Pelado Fire Claims will be established within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to receive, process, and pay these claims.
Deadlines for submitting certain claims and for purchasing flood insurance will be extended until the end of 2027 or 2028, providing more time for affected individuals.
Funds allocated for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire victims cannot be used for Cerro Pelado Fire compensation, ensuring separate funding streams.
