Clergy Can Rejoin Social Security: New Rules

The Clergy Act allows clergy members who previously opted out of Social Security coverage to rejoin the system. They can do so by filing an application by the due date of their second tax year after 2025. This change provides them with the opportunity to receive retirement and other Social Security benefits, which was previously unavailable due to their prior exemption.
Key points
Clergy members who previously opted out of Social Security can now choose to rejoin the system.
Applications to rejoin must be filed by the tax return due date for the second tax year beginning after December 31, 2025.
Rejoining means clergy will pay into and become eligible for Social Security benefits, such as retirement and disability.
If the application is filed late, it must include payment for any self-employment taxes that would have been due for that tax year.
