Digital Gun Tracing: New Databases for Law Enforcement
This act aims to establish electronic, searchable databases for firearm transactions. This will streamline the work of law enforcement agencies in detecting gun-related crimes, potentially enhancing public safety. Citizens will not be directly affected by new obligations but may experience indirect benefits from improved crime-fighting effectiveness.
Key points
Requires the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to establish electronic databases for tracking firearm transactions.
Databases will include information on firearm importation, production, shipment, receipt, and sale, provided by licensed dealers.
Access to the databases will be restricted solely for law enforcement investigations, foreign intelligence, and compliance inspections, with no search capability for individuals' personally identifiable information.
Licensed dealers may voluntarily provide electronic access or relinquish older, non-electronic records to the ATF after 10 years from the transaction date.
