Improved Medicaid Care for Sickle Cell Disease Patients

This act allows State Medicaid programs to provide comprehensive, coordinated healthcare to individuals with sickle cell disease. Starting January 1, 2025, eligible Medicaid beneficiaries with sickle cell disease will have access to "health homes" offering a wide range of services, potentially including dental and vision care in some states. This aims to enhance the quality of life and access to treatment for these patients.
Key points
Beginning January 1, 2025, individuals with sickle cell disease covered by Medicaid will gain access to comprehensive healthcare through specialized "health homes."
States will be able to develop care plans focused solely on sickle cell disease, and the Secretary of Health will publish guidelines on best practices for these plans.
In some states, services offered within "health homes" for sickle cell disease patients may also include dental and vision care, expanding the scope of available benefits.
