Easier Public Service Loan Forgiveness for Public Sector Workers

This bill aims to make it easier for individuals in public service to have their federal student loans forgiven. The changes expand the types of qualifying payments and employment periods, which should help millions of citizens reduce their debt and improve their financial situation. The new rules are designed to fix previous program issues that prevented many from benefiting.
Key points
Expanded Qualifying Payments: Many previously rejected payments, including those made during deferment and forbearance periods, will now count towards the 120 required payments.
Revised Public Service Employment Definition: Facilitates forgiveness for teachers, emergency responders, military personnel, and other public service professions, including flexible rules for part-time work for certain groups.
Parent PLUS Loan Forgiveness: Parents with Parent PLUS loans can qualify for forgiveness based on their own public service employment or that of the student for whom the loan was taken.
Recognition of Prior Employment: Borrowers who consolidated their loans will receive credit for years of public service employment and payments made on their original, pre-consolidation loans.
