Easier Ambulance Access for Hospitals in Difficult Terrain

This act aims to improve access to ambulance services for hospitals located in hard-to-reach areas, such as mountainous terrain or regions with only secondary roads. These changes could enhance the speed and availability of medical assistance for residents in these areas, ensuring these hospitals can continue to provide critical emergency services.
Key points
Ambulance service fee schedules for critical access hospitals in difficult terrain are updated, allowing a shorter 15-mile drive (instead of 35 miles) for mountainous or secondary road areas, potentially reducing medical transport costs.
Hospitals that already met the distance requirements for mountainous terrain or secondary roads will be deemed to meet the new 15-mile requirement, ensuring their continued designation as critical access hospitals.
The new provisions are set to take effect from January 1, 2025, for hospital designation and from January 1, 2026, for ambulance service fee updates.
