Fair Repair Act: Mandating Access to Parts and Tools for Electronics.

This Act requires manufacturers of digital electronic equipment to provide necessary parts, tools, and documentation to independent repair shops and device owners on fair terms. This change aims to lower repair costs and increase repair options by fostering competition outside of authorized service networks. Crucially, manufacturers are prohibited from using software to block the functionality of non-original, working replacement parts.
Key points
Manufacturers must provide parts, tools, and documentation for digital equipment repair to owners and independent providers.
Bans 'parts pairing' and other mechanisms that prevent the use or reduce the functionality of non-original replacement parts.
Owners and independent shops gain access to security information needed to disable and reset security locks during repair.
The law is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and State Attorneys General.
