Safe Drug Disposal at Home: Grants for Opioid Patients and Pharmacy Education.

This law establishes a grant program for up to five states, allowing pharmacies to provide free, safe in-home drug disposal systems to patients receiving opioid prescriptions who are at risk of overdose. The goal is to prevent accidental misuse and environmental contamination from unused medication, directly enhancing household safety. Patients will also receive mandatory, brief safety education from pharmacists regarding proper storage and disposal.
Key points
Patients receiving opioid prescriptions (especially first-time users or those with dosage changes) will receive free systems for safe drug disposal at home that render the medication unusable.
Pharmacists must provide brief education (up to 5 minutes) on safe storage and disposal, which is crucial for preventing misuse and accidental ingestion.
The program is a demonstration initiative limited to five states, funded with $56 million through 2029, to test the effectiveness of this approach.
