DHS Battery Ban: Ending Reliance on Foreign Adversaries for Critical Tech.

This Act prohibits the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including agencies like the Border Patrol and TSA, from procuring batteries from specific foreign entities, primarily Chinese companies, starting October 2028. The goal is to enhance national security by reducing dependence on potential adversaries for critical technology used in government operations. This measure aims to secure the supply chain for agencies vital to public safety.
Key points
Starting October 1, 2028, DHS components (CBP, TSA, Coast Guard, etc.) are banned from buying batteries from a list of specified foreign manufacturers.
The ban targets companies linked to the Chinese military, those on certain export control lists, and major battery producers like CATL and BYD.
Waivers are possible if the batteries pose no security risk and no comparable, non-prohibited alternatives are available, or if they are for research purposes.
The law expires in 2033 and does not require the removal or replacement of batteries already in use in existing equipment.
