Safer IV Drugs: Medicare Incentives for Hospital Automation

This law encourages hospitals to invest in advanced automated systems for preparing sterile intravenous drugs, such as chemotherapy. Medicare beneficiaries will receive safer and more accurate medication doses because the mixing process will be performed by machines rather than manually. Hospitals will receive an additional payment of $40 for each such treatment, with the program running until 2031.
Key points
Increased Patient Safety: IV drugs will be prepared by automated systems, minimizing the risk of human error and contamination.
Financial Incentive for Hospitals: Medicare will pay hospitals an extra $40 for each IV treatment prepared using approved automated technology.
Technology Requirements: Automation must meet strict FDA standards, including barcode verification of ingredients and dose accuracy control.
