Expanded Death Benefits for Families of ROTC and Reserve Service Members.

This act expands critical benefits for the families of service members who die, particularly those in early training stages or reserve programs (ROTC/DEP). The changes ensure that survivors receive the death gratuity payment, Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI), and casualty assistance, regardless of the deceased's short service time. This aims to increase financial security and support for grieving families.
Key points
Removal of the 13-day service limit: Families will receive the death gratuity payment even if the death occurred within the first 13 days of service.
Expanded SGLI coverage: Life insurance coverage is extended to certain Reserves and individuals in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), regardless of their current duty status.
Increased family support: All survivors entitled to the death gratuity will also receive assistance with the disposition of remains and support from a dedicated casualty assistance officer.
