Easing Nurse Aide Training Rules to Address Healthcare Staff Shortages.

This law creates waivers for certain training and certification rules for nurse aides in skilled nursing and nursing facilities facing staff shortages. It allows new aides to work for up to 12 months (instead of 4) before completing full certification, provided the facility has maintained a high standard of care quality. The goal is to quickly increase the availability of caregivers in areas designated as having a nurse aide shortage, potentially improving access to care for residents.
Key points
Extended Certification Deadline: Nurse aides in designated shortage areas now have 12 months, instead of 4, to complete their required training and competency certification.
Work Experience Counts: Hours worked by a nurse aide in any nursing facility can now be credited toward the mandatory 75 hours of initial training.
Quality Requirement: These waivers are only available to facilities located in shortage areas that have not received citations for substandard direct patient care quality in the last two years.
