Expanding Mental Health Access: Medicare Coverage for Supervised Psychology Trainees.

This Act aims to expand access to psychological and behavioral health services for beneficiaries of Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP. It allows for the reimbursement of services provided by advanced psychology trainees (interns and residents) under the general supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist, thereby increasing the available mental health workforce. This change is designed to help patients receive necessary mental health care more easily.
Key points
Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP will cover psychological services provided by advanced trainees and residents under general supervision.
General supervision means the licensed psychologist does not need to be physically present during the service delivery, potentially increasing service availability.
The government must create a specific billing code (GC modifier) within one year to facilitate accurate reimbursement for these trainee services under Medicare.
