GPO Modernization: Free and Permanent Public Access to US Government Information.
This Act aims to modernize the Government Publishing Office (GPO) by focusing on ensuring citizens have free, equitable, and permanent access to all US Government public information, regardless of format. It establishes a clear definition of 'Government Public Information' and creates the National Collection of U.S. Government Public Information, managed digitally. Citizens will benefit from easier access to historical and current government documents through an improved online catalog and a network of depository libraries required to provide access to digital content.
Key points
Guaranteed Free Access: The Act establishes the public's right to free and permanent access to all Federal Government public information (including declassified documents).
Digital National Collection: A National Collection of U.S. Government Public Information is established, managed by the GPO, focusing on identifying, cataloging, preserving, and disseminating all government documents digitally.
Enhanced Depository Libraries: Depository libraries must provide access to digital content, and the GPO can designate new digital-only libraries, expanding the reach of information access.
