Free Service Dogs and Veterinary Insurance for Veterans with Disabilities.

This law establishes a five-year pilot program requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to award grants to accredited nonprofits. The goal is to provide service dogs free of charge to eligible veterans suffering from specific conditions, including PTSD, TBI, or significant mobility issues. Crucially, the VA will also provide a commercial veterinary insurance policy for the service dog, which continues indefinitely, regardless of the pilot program's duration.
Key points
Veterans with qualifying disabilities (including PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury) can receive a service dog at no cost to them.
The government will provide commercial veterinary insurance for every service dog obtained through this program, covering ongoing care costs.
Veterans seeking a dog for mental health conditions must undergo evaluation by a VA care team to confirm the dog is the optimal treatment approach.
The pilot program is authorized to receive $10 million annually for five consecutive fiscal years.
