Improved Healthcare and Ban on Isolation for Pregnant Women in Custody.

This Act establishes mandatory standards for healthcare and nutrition for women who are pregnant, in labor, or postpartum in federal correctional facilities. The main change is the near-total prohibition of placing these women in restrictive housing (solitary confinement) and ensuring specialized care, including transfer to halfway houses for high-risk pregnancies. The goal is to protect the health of the mother and child and ensure humane conditions during and after pregnancy.
Key points
Prohibits placing pregnant women (from confirmation until 12 weeks postpartum) in solitary confinement, with very limited exceptions for immediate safety risks.
Mandates specialized prenatal care, appropriate nutrition (including vitamins), and psychological and educational support (e.g., parental rights information and breastfeeding education).
Women with high-risk pregnancies may be transferred to Residential Reentry Centers for better medical care, preferably close to family.
Requires federal and state data collection on the care provided to incarcerated pregnant women to increase system transparency.
