Peace Corps Reauthorization Act: Enhanced Support, Health Care, and Federal Hiring Status.

This Act reauthorizes the Peace Corps and increases its funding to $410.5 million annually through 2028. It significantly improves health care provisions, including extended post-service care and better access to necessary medications. Furthermore, volunteers will receive higher readjustment allowances and enhanced noncompetitive eligibility status for federal hiring, easing their transition back into the U.S. workforce.
Key points
Increased Financial Allowance: The readjustment allowance for volunteers and leaders is raised from $125 to $375 per month, increasing their savings upon return.
Improved Health Care: Volunteers gain the right to continued health care for 6 months after service termination, along with better access to antimalarial drugs and hygiene products.
Federal Hiring Advantage: Noncompetitive Eligibility (NCE) status for federal hiring is codified and extended to 2 years (with potential extension to 3 years), and the eligibility period is paused during government hiring freezes or shutdowns.
Protection Against Retaliation: A comprehensive policy is established to protect volunteers from reprisal or retaliation for reporting waste, fraud, abuse of authority, or health and safety threats.
Restoration of Service: Protocols are set up to facilitate the safe return to service for volunteers evacuated due to catastrophic events, including the opportunity to return to their previous country of service (excluding China).
