Stricter Vetting and Monitoring for Unaccompanied Migrant Children Sponsors.

This bill mandates rigorous background checks, including fingerprinting and abuse registry checks, for individuals sponsoring unaccompanied migrant children to enhance child safety and prevent trafficking. It requires mandatory pre- and post-release home visits by the government, including multiple unannounced checks during the first two years of placement. The law also requires retroactive vetting of sponsors who have taken children since January 2021.
Key points
All adults in a prospective sponsor's household must undergo comprehensive vetting, including fingerprint-based criminal history and sex offender registry checks.
Mandatory unannounced in-person home visits are required: at least 5 during the first year and 4 during the second year after a child is placed.
Placement is generally prohibited with sponsors unlawfully present in the U.S., unless they are the child's biological parent, legal guardian, or relative.
Sponsors who received children since January 2021 must immediately undergo the new, stricter vetting process.
