EASING SNAP ACCESS: Removing Food Assistance Barriers for Students

This bill removes specific eligibility restrictions that currently prevent many college and training program students from accessing the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps). The changes allow bona fide students enrolled at least half-time to apply for food assistance, aiming to alleviate food insecurity among the student population. These provisions are scheduled to take effect on January 2, 2024.
Key points
Students enrolled at least half-time in higher education or training programs will become eligible for SNAP benefits.
The law eliminates previous special requirements and disqualifications that specifically barred students from participating in the SNAP program.
The goal is to provide essential food support to low-income students pursuing education.
