Financial Relief for Military Families After Retiree's Death.

This law protects military families from having to immediately repay the final military retirement payment deposited into a joint account after the retiree's death. Instead, the overpayment will be forgiven or offset against future survivor benefits. This provides crucial financial stability during the difficult period of bereavement.
Key points
The government must forgive the overpayment of retired pay if it was deposited into a joint account shared with a designated beneficiary after the retiree's death.
If the beneficiary receives a Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity, the overpayment can be offset in small installments (1/12th) over 12 months, rather than requiring immediate lump-sum repayment.
These protections apply to payments made to individuals who die on or after the law's enactment date.
