Increased protection and harsher penalties for attacks on public safety officers.

This Act establishes new federal crimes and significantly harsher penalties for the killing, attempted killing, or assault of public safety officers, including police, firefighters, EMTs, and judicial officers. The goal is to enhance the safety of public servants, especially those who receive federal funding or are involved in interstate activities. Citizens should expect that attacks against those who ensure public safety will be prosecuted more severely at the federal level.
Key points
New Federal Crime: Killing or attempting to kill a public safety officer (police, firefighter, EMT, judge) is punishable by 30 years to life imprisonment, or the death penalty.
Harsher Assault Penalties: Assaulting a public safety officer, depending on the injury or use of a weapon, carries a minimum sentence ranging from 1 year up to at least 20 years.
Expanded Scope of Protection: Protection covers federal officers, judges, and state/local officers whose agencies receive federal financial assistance.
Sentencing Enhancement: Penalties are increased by at least 5 offense levels if the offender lured the victim to a location for the purpose of the attack or killing.
