PACE Program Enrollees Gain Choice in Medicare Part D Drug Plans

This law grants Medicare-only participants in the PACE program (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) the option to select a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan starting January 1, 2025. This change increases flexibility, allowing beneficiaries to choose a drug plan outside of the PACE provider's bundled offering. PACE providers must still coordinate care and monitor drug usage for these participants.
Key points
Medicare-only PACE participants gain the right to choose an independent Medicare Part D drug plan, increasing their options for prescription coverage.
The chosen standalone drug plan must have estimated out-of-pocket costs equal to or less than the plan currently offered by the PACE program.
PACE programs are required to educate participants about this choice, assist them with enrollment, and coordinate ongoing pharmaceutical care with the new plan provider.
