Recognition and Compensation for Southeast Alaska Native Communities: Land and Corporations.

This law corrects a historical oversight by allowing five Southeast Alaska Native communities (Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, Wrangell) to form their own Urban Corporations. Native residents of these communities will receive corporate shares and the right to manage approximately 115,200 acres of conveyed land. The public retains access to these lands for noncommercial recreation, hunting, and fishing, subject to reasonable safety and resource protection rules set by the corporations.
Key points
Five Alaska Native communities are authorized to form corporations and receive 23,040 acres of federal land each as final compensation.
Native individuals enrolled in these communities will receive shares, and the corporations may establish settlement trusts for health, education, and welfare.
The conveyed lands remain open for public, noncommercial hunting, fishing, and recreation, subject to safety restrictions imposed by the new corporations.
