Expanding Local, Fresh Produce in School Meals Program.

This Act converts a pilot project into a permanent program aimed at increasing the availability of fresh, domestically grown, unprocessed fruits and vegetables in school meals. The goal is to enhance children's nutrition while providing economic support to small, local, and socially disadvantaged farmers. The program is funded with $15 million annually from 2024 through 2028.
Key points
Healthier School Meals: The program expands from 8 to 14 participating states, ensuring more children receive meals containing fresh, locally sourced produce.
Support for Local Agriculture: States are prioritized based on their commitment to purchasing from small, local, and socially disadvantaged farmers, including Tribal producers.
Dedicated Funding: $15 million is appropriated annually (FY 2024-2028) to cover procurement, administrative costs, and technical assistance for participating states.
