FMLA Expansion: Leave to Care for Domestic Partners, Adult Children, and Extended Family.

This law significantly expands the right to unpaid family and medical leave (FMLA), allowing employees to take time off to care for a much wider circle of relatives, including domestic partners, in-laws, adult children, grandparents, and siblings. It also introduces a limited, additional leave entitlement (up to 24 hours annually) for routine medical appointments and participation in children's or grandchildren's school activities. These changes provide greater flexibility for employees managing family and health responsibilities.
Key points
FMLA eligibility expanded to cover care for domestic partners, in-laws, adult children, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and any individual with an equivalent close family relationship.
New entitlement to additional short leave (up to 24 hours annually) for routine family wellness needs and parental involvement in school or community activities.
Employees can substitute accrued paid leave (vacation, personal, or sick leave) for this new additional leave.
The expanded rights apply to both private sector employees covered by FMLA and Federal government employees.
