Banning Credit Checks for Job Decisions: Equal Employment Act.

This bill prohibits employers from using consumer credit reports, which detail creditworthiness or debt capacity, when making hiring, firing, or promotion decisions. This change ensures that personal financial history unrelated to job performance cannot be used as a basis for adverse employment actions. The only exceptions are for jobs requiring national security clearance or where credit checks are legally mandated.
Key points
Employers are generally forbidden from reviewing your credit history or debt status when deciding whether to hire or promote you.
The ban applies even if you give permission for the employer to run a credit check.
Exceptions are limited to positions requiring national security clearance or when required by existing law.
