Expanding Access to All FDA-Approved Opioid Overdose Reversal Medications.

This law broadens the definition of life-saving opioid overdose reversal agents eligible for federal grant funding. State and Tribal programs fighting the opioid crisis will no longer be restricted to purchasing only Naloxone, but can use funds for any FDA-approved drug or device designed to reverse an overdose. This change aims to increase the availability and variety of life-saving tools in communities struggling with addiction.
Key points
Federal grants for fighting the opioid crisis (like State Opioid Response Grants) can now fund the purchase of any FDA-approved drug or device for emergency overdose treatment.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must update existing grant rules by the end of 2023 to remove the limitation to Naloxone.
This provides greater flexibility for states and tribes to choose the most effective and accessible life-saving tools.
