Northern Border Region Funding Boost: Infrastructure, Health, and Housing Investment.

This Act reauthorizes and increases funding for the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) through 2032, dedicating resources to economic development, infrastructure, and new health programs. Citizens in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont can expect greater investments in local roads, water systems, high-speed internet, as well as support for housing construction and combating substance abuse. These changes aim to improve quality of life and increase employment opportunities in the region.
Key points
Increased Development Funding: Authorizes increased annual funding (up to $60 million) for infrastructure projects, workforce development, and business support in the Northern Border region.
Focus on Health and Addiction: New grant programs prioritize the creation and expansion of health facilities, with a special emphasis on treating substance use disorders (opioids/methamphetamine), including through telemedicine infrastructure.
Infrastructure and Housing Support: Funds can now be used to design climate-resilient infrastructure and promote the production of housing to meet economic and workforce needs.
Expanded Geographic Reach: Two additional counties (Lincoln, ME, and Merrimack, NH) are added to the NBRC service area, making more communities eligible for federal grants.
