Eliminating Waiting Periods for Disability Benefits and Medicare Access.

This law eliminates the standard waiting period before individuals can start receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments. Crucially, it also removes the two-year waiting period for eligible disabled individuals to access Medicare coverage. This ensures that disabled citizens receive necessary financial support and healthcare access much sooner after their disability determination.
Key points
The 5-month waiting period for initial SSDI payments is eliminated, providing faster financial relief to disabled workers.
The 24-month waiting period for Medicare eligibility is removed for certain eligible individuals receiving SSDI.
Full elimination of waiting periods takes effect on January 1, 2028, with a gradual reduction of the SSDI waiting period starting in 2023.
