Protecting Veterans from Delayed VA Medical Bills and Billing Errors.

This law protects veterans from being forced to pay medical copayments if the VA makes an error and notifies them of the bill too late. If the notification is delayed by more than 180 days (or 18 months for non-VA care), the veteran can apply to have the debt waived. It establishes clear deadlines for the VA to issue bills, providing veterans with greater financial certainty.
Key points
The VA must notify veterans of copayments for care received at VA facilities within 180 days of the service date.
If the VA delays notification due to an error by more than 180 days (or 18 months for non-VA care), the veteran may qualify for a waiver (cancellation) of the required payment.
If the deadline is missed, the VA cannot collect the payment until they offer the veteran information on applying for a waiver or establishing a payment plan.
