Expanding Medicare Coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy Services.

This law significantly broadens access to professional Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) services for seniors and disabled individuals covered by Medicare. Beneficiaries dealing with conditions like obesity, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses will gain coverage for dietary counseling, which was previously limited only to diabetes and kidney disease. This expansion aims to improve chronic disease management and overall health outcomes by increasing access to specialists.
Key points
Medicare Part B coverage for nutrition counseling is expanded to include numerous chronic conditions, such as obesity, hypertension, cancer, HIV, AIDS, and cardiovascular disease.
Access to these services is made easier by allowing more healthcare professionals, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical psychologists (for eating disorders), to refer patients or provide MNT.
