Paid leave for bone marrow or stem cell donation to save lives.

This Act expands the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to include protected leave for bone marrow or blood stem cell donation. Citizens will gain up to 40 hours of additional, protected leave within a 12-month period for donation-related activities, including preparation, the procedure itself, and post-donation recovery. This change makes it easier for employees to save lives without fearing job loss or exhausting their standard FMLA leave.
Key points
New Leave Entitlement: Employees can take up to 40 hours of protected leave annually for bone marrow or blood stem cell donation.
Job Protection: This 40-hour leave covers pre-donation, donation, and post-donation activities.
Flexibility: The leave can be taken intermittently or on a reduced schedule, subject to employer approval.
Substitution Rule: Employees may choose to substitute accrued paid leave (vacation, sick leave) for these 40 hours, but employers cannot require it.
