Sultana Steamboat Disaster Commemorative Coins: Funding for Historical Museum.

This Act authorizes the Treasury to mint commemorative coins (gold, silver, and clad) in 2027 to honor the victims of the Sultana steamboat explosion of 1865, the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history. Citizens can purchase these coins as collector's items. Surcharges collected from the sale of these coins will be paid to the Sultana Historical Preservation Society Inc. to fund the construction and maintenance of a museum dedicated to telling the story of the Sultana disaster. The program is designed to operate at no net cost to the U.S. Government.
Key points
New Commemorative Coins: Gold ($5), silver ($1), and half-dollar clad coins will be minted in 2027 to memorialize the Sultana disaster.
Museum Funding: A surcharge (ranging from $5 to $35 per coin) will be added to the sale price, with all proceeds going directly to the Sultana Historical Preservation Society Inc. for museum operations and construction.
No Government Cost: The Treasury must ensure that the entire cost of designing and issuing the coins is recovered from sales before any funds are disbursed to the museum.
