Enhanced Financial Protection for Servicemembers: Training and Expanded Interest Rate Limits

This Act strengthens financial protections for servicemembers by including training on credit relief benefits under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) in financial literacy programs. A key change requires creditors to apply the interest rate limit to all obligations incurred before military service, even if they were not specifically mentioned in the notice provided by the servicemember. Furthermore, reserve component members will be notified of their rights upon every call to active duty exceeding 30 days.
Key points
Financial Training: Inclusion of information on consumer financial protections, including interest rate limits under the SCRA, in servicemember training programs.
Expanded Debt Protection: Creditors must apply the interest rate limit to all obligations incurred before military service, regardless of whether they were specifically mentioned in the servicemember's notice.
Document Submission Methods: Creditors must provide mechanisms (online, mail, or fax) for servicemembers to submit documents required for the interest rate limitation, based on the servicemember's choice.
Notifications for Reservists: Reserve component members will be notified of their SCRA rights upon entering service and whenever called or ordered to active duty for more than 30 days.
