Greater healthcare choice for federal civilian employees in Reserve and National Guard.

This Act allows members of the Selected Reserve and National Guard who also work as federal civilian employees to choose between the military healthcare plan (TRICARE Reserve Select, TRS) and the civilian plan (Federal Employee Health Benefits, FEHB). Currently, they are prohibited from enrolling in TRS. This change, effective January 1, 2025, aims to ensure continuity of care, especially during mobilization cycles, and enhance overall military readiness.
Key points
Selected Reserve and National Guard members who are federal employees will gain the option to enroll in the military healthcare plan (TRS), which was previously prohibited.
The change takes effect on January 1, 2025, providing service members with greater flexibility and potentially lower-cost health insurance options.
The goal is to ensure continuity of healthcare for service members transitioning between active duty and civilian federal employment.
