Fair Repair Act: Easier and Cheaper Repairs for Digital Electronics.

This bill requires manufacturers of digital electronic equipment (like phones and laptops) to provide owners and independent repair shops with necessary parts, tools, and documentation on fair terms. This change aims to make repairing broken devices cheaper and more accessible by increasing competition and reducing reliance on expensive authorized services. Manufacturers are prohibited from using software to intentionally block functional, non-approved replacement parts.
Key points
Manufacturers must provide parts, tools, and repair manuals for digital electronics to independent repair providers and owners on terms equivalent to those offered to authorized partners.
Bans mechanisms (like parts pairing) that prevent the installation or full functioning of otherwise-functional, non-manufacturer-approved replacement components.
The Act does not apply to motor vehicles or medical devices.
Enforcement will be handled by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and State Attorneys General.
