Pharmacy Addiction Care: Grants for Buprenorphine Treatment and Recovery Support.

This Act establishes a 3-year grant program to enable community pharmacies to provide comprehensive care for individuals with opioid and other substance use disorders. Citizens will gain easier access to addiction treatment, including buprenorphine, directly at pharmacies, significantly lowering barriers to therapy. Funds can be used for pharmacist training, private counseling spaces, medication costs, and telehealth services.
Key points
Easier Access to Treatment: Pharmacies will be able to offer buprenorphine and manage withdrawal, providing same-day, low-barrier care services.
Pharmacist-Physician Collaboration: The program requires collaborative practice agreements allowing pharmacists to manage drug therapy for addiction treatment.
Funding for Care: Grants will cover medication costs (up to a 30-day supply of buprenorphine), staff training, and construction of private spaces for counseling in pharmacies.
Reduced Barriers: Pharmacies must provide low-barrier treatment, including reduced or eliminated requirements for payment, insurance, age limits, and identification.
