SPIES Act: Eliminating Statute of Limitations for Espionage and Related Offenses.

This Act removes the time limit (statute of limitations) for prosecuting offenses related to espionage and conspiracy to commit espionage. It also applies to cases of unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization if committed to facilitate espionage activities. This change ensures that individuals suspected of these serious national security crimes can be prosecuted at any time, regardless of when the offense occurred.
Key points
No Time Limit for Espionage: Prosecutors can bring charges for espionage (Sections 951 and 794 of the U.S. Code) at any time, removing previous time constraints.
Immigration Fraud Linked to Espionage: The elimination of the time limit also covers unlawfully obtaining citizenship if done to facilitate espionage.
Strengthening National Security: The change aims to enhance the ability to prosecute individuals who threaten national security, even many years after the crime.
