Expanding Veterans’ Long-Term Care Options: Assisted Living Pilot Program.

This Act establishes a three-year pilot program to offer eligible veterans the choice of assisted living services instead of traditional nursing home care. This change provides veterans, including those currently in nursing homes, with greater flexibility and the option to receive care in a less institutional setting. The program aims to assess the effectiveness and veteran satisfaction with this new support model, ensuring continuity of care even after the pilot concludes.
Key points
New Care Option: Veterans eligible for nursing home care will be able to choose assisted living services through a new pilot program.
Program Scope: The pilot will be implemented in at least six Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISN), focusing on regions with the highest percentage of veterans currently receiving nursing home care.
Guaranteed Continuity: Upon the pilot program's termination, participating veterans will have the option to continue receiving assisted living services at the Department of Veterans Affairs' expense.
Quality Oversight: The VA must establish methods for assessing the quality of care provided, and participating facilities will be subject to annual inspections.
